Ints. of banquet hall. The MC introduces the Hon Dean Rusk and Earl D. Johnson, both of whom speak briefly. Ridgway is introduced and makes the main speech of the evening. The Gen speaks of the Reserve and the regular officer Corps and says in part: "We could not meet tonight without noting the profound significance to us, and I think to the world, of the birth 220 years ago tomorrow of George Washington...Douglas Southall Freeman, distinguished historian, has an objective analysis of the character of this great man in which he discharged his responsibilities through the winter which included Valley Forge...Korea is but one more revelation of the continuance of that struggle...We hear and we still hear at times, and I regret to say from Americans referring to Korea, "Why are we there?" General Matthew Bunker Ridgway (March 3, 1895 – July 26, 1993) was a senior officer in the United States Army, who served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1952–1953) and the 19th Chief of Staff of the United States Army (1953–1955). He fought with distinction during World War II, where he was the Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division, leading it in action in Sicily, Italy and Normandy, before taking command of the newly formed XVIII Airborne Corps in August 1944.
